Trying to remain middle class

I like to think of myself as a logical spender but the contents of my food cupboard tells a different story. Two bottles of champagne rest against my 10p Sainsbury's Basic noodles. The fridge is bare and all that remains are a few choice items - butter, milk and pesto...and some over-priced Gu chocolate puds. There is no logic to it. I am happy to spend money on Twinings tea and fancy olive oil, but other things get neglected.
I was unaware of this until I had a friend over for dinner, who pointed how my flatmate and I possessed no food, bar a few luxury items. Hotel Chocolat packets litter the flat yet we tell ourselves we can't afford to spend a lot of money on dinner, and that we are living the hard life. Perhaps this is what happens when you come from a middle class family, where Lurpak butter and Manchego cheese are common place. You move into the real world on a low paid job, and try to keep the same standard of living - only you can't quite afford to.

Champagne and noodles - not to be consumed together

But the lack of logic extends out of the flat too, one night I recall eating my 28p noodles for tea (I stepped it up a notch that night...own brand not basics, oh yes) and then justifying two £6 cocktails later that evening.

One thing that definitely doesn't help me to curb my spending is time. I've had the last two weeks off work as paid holiday and have found it very hard not to spend money. I return to work tomorrow, as sadly my two weeks have come to an end. I am still trying to pursue a career in marketing and have two interviews in just over a week, so that's exciting - well, more terrifying than exciting. Perhaps if I do manage to secure one of the two jobs I could upgrade to branded noodles - what a thought - or scrap the noodles altogether, because let's face it, they are pretty much the least nutritious dinner one could make.
